England’s leading wicket-taker in the longest form of the game became only the fourth man to achieve the feat when Liam Dawson took an excellent catch at backward point to get rid of Elgar early on the opening day of the second Test in Nottingham.

Spinners Muttiah Muralitharan, Anil Kumble and Shane Warne are the other bowlers to have claimed 300 Test wickets in their respective homelands.

Anderson is unsurprisingly the only player from any nation to reach that landmark in Tests played in England and Wales.

The breakthrough took Anderson’s tally of Test wickets to 471 and reduced the tourists, trailing 1-0 in the four-match series, to 18-1 under grey skies after Faf du Plessis won the toss.
