Back when The Chronicles of Narnia movies were first hitting theaters, Garfield was just a struggling actor starting out in the industry and had not yet been cast as Spider-Man. While these days, it seems likely that if he expressed an interest in appearing in them, he’d be able to name what role and how much money he’d make, there was a time when he didn’t have that kind of clout. When he let his people know he wanted to play Prince Caspian, he was rejected in no uncertain terms.

Speaking in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Spider-Man: No Way Home star laid out the painful truth of how he was told he wasn’t going to be getting a role in the movie series he had his heart set on. He started out by saying that he was absolutely desperate, and he constantly bugged his agent about getting the role. It turns out that Garfield bugged his agent about the movie so often, that eventually, his people told him the cold hard truth.
Those who were in charge of The Chronicles of Narnia franchise didn’t think that the actor was good-looking enough for the role of Prince Caspian. In the end, despite the fact that he badly wanted the role, it was turned over to Ben Barnes instead. Now, Garfield says that he is not unhappy with the choice producers made, as Barnes is a talented and handsome man in the Spider-Man star’s estimation.
While that might have been a setback at the beginning of his career, it looks as though he was able to pick up the pieces and make a name for himself after all. In 2007, he first found success in Boy A and then saw his career really take off when he starred in The Social Network and Never Let Me Go. Two years after he found stardom, he was cast in The Amazing Spider-Man.
These days, when Garfield isn’t appearing as Peter Parker from another universe, he’s giving what some are calling an Academy Award-wining level performances in films like Tick, Tick… Boom! It’s safe to say that even if he doesn’t get to appear as Peter Parker again after Spider-Man: No Way Home, he’s managed to build quite the career after his Chronicles of Narnia loss.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters.
